A lot depends on the plant.
How to get a plant out of a ceramic pot.
I have several like this in my living room.
Use clean dirt in the new pot.
Generally if the container is widest at the top so the soil could all slide out it is relati.
That said if your potted plants have become root bound you need to learn the best way to remove root bound plants out of pots.
Dry with a lint free cloth.
You can use a knife to help separate the plant and the pot.
Be sure to dump out any excess water so the roots do not become waterlogged.
Slide a long bladed knife all round the inside between pot and plant then turn the pot upside down.
Then it can just lift in and out easily no problems.
Remove any plants from the planter and set them in a plastic container or another glazed ceramic planter until you re finished repainting.
Leave about 1 to 2 inches from the top of the soil to the pot s rim.
Put dirt in the new pot then water it so you know it s wet at the bottom.
The way to grow plants inside such ceramic pots is to use a plastic pot which fits inside the rim neatly.
Some handle transplanting very well others are very sensitive and can be hurt badly with minimal disruption of their roots.
Allow the force of gravity to gently ease the plant out of the pot.
Many ceramic pots come with a saucer.
Once you get the plant out of the pot take the time to separate the roots.
Rotate the plant a few inches in both directions to loosen it up and allow it to fall out.
I hope this helps.
Ideally the plant should fall out.
Remove the plant from it s old pot.
Set the pot in a shallow container for the water to seep out into.
If the plant won t slide out easily tap the upside down pot against a hard surface such as a garden bench or nursery table.
Better perhaps if it can be done whilst dormant and the roots are asleep anyway.
Thoroughly wash the planter with warm soapy water inside and out to remove dirt and debris.
A flood the pot get it really soaking and let it stand for an hour or two.
Rather than pulling the plant out turn it upside down while placing your hand over the top of the pot.
Put in the tree and spread out the roots that are left on the plant.
